Mishima's brilliant plays are unknown outside Japan, something this scholarly yet fluid English-language anthology attempts to change. The five later plays and three dramatic essays include scholarly introductions and footnotes by Sato to help readers decipher the content. Mishima's complex and well-plotted plays are drawn from various sources, but all show his idealism and loyalty to the old Japan, and the common theme of premeditated ritual in four of the five pieces seems to foretell the author's 1970 public suicide.

Makgeolli
Makgeolli (막걸리) ou takju (탁주), est un type d'alcool de riz coréen doux et laiteux (6,5 à 7°), issu d'une fermentation des amidons de céréales (généralement du riz, mais aussi de la patate douce) après cuisson, par des ferments lactiques. Bien que les Anglo-Saxons le qualifient de Rice Wine (« vin de riz »), le makgeolli est plus proche de la bière, tant par le mode de préparation que par les ingrédients utilisés.
